Sidd Saran

CEO/President

Sidd Saran joined Salem Steel as President and CEO in January 2017. He has been on the board of directors of the Company since 2016.

Sidd brings extensive experience in finance, sales, strategy, and operations along with an entrepreneurial spirit. He has enabled growth of firms in a wide variety of industries including industrials, business services, technology and media. Sidd began his career in investment banking at the Technology Group at Credit Suisse. Post business school, he was an Executive Director and led the technology and business services sectors of the Financial Sponsors and Leveraged Finance Group at UBS where he worked with firms such as Bombardier, Travelport, Orbitz, Southern Graphic Systems and sponsors including Blackstone, Apollo and Apax. Subsequently, he co-founded a technology incubator and a management consulting firm.

Sidd enjoys participating in marathons, triathlons, and long cycle rides and teaching engineering and robotics to children.

Sidd has a B.A. in physics from Middlebury College from where he graduated with Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude honors, a Bachelor of Engineering from Dartmouth College and an M.B.A. from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.


Jim Trochanowski

Senior Vice President

Jim graduated from Princeton University and had 28 years’ experience with Olympus Optical Co in their Medical, Surgical, and Industrial Divisions rising from a Sales and Product intern to Vice President of Operations, working with all the international divisions of Olympus.

His diverse background in Logistics, Inventory Control, Supply Chain, Warehousing, Distribution, Business Development, Sales, Order Entry, Quality and Compliance will serve Salem Steel well. He has managed all aspects of these functions as well as served on Olympus’ board.

His general management skills will provide Salem Steel’s customers with superior service that they can expect and deserve.


Thomas Thoelen

Vice President of Finance

Tom graduated from Montclair University with a degree in accounting. He has been a Corporate Controller for 25 years in both manufacturing and service related industries.

He started his career with a division of American Optical and spent most of his career with Barry Callebaut, the second largest chocolate manufacturer in the world, working in conjunction with management at the local level and divisional levels, all the way through to the International headquarters.

His strength is the ability to work with all facets of an organization in order to optimize internal functions, and to provide better service to its customers, while keeping costs controlled to allow for future growth.


Philip Koller

Vice President of Operations

Philip graduated from Rutgers University with a Bachelors Degree in Business Management and began his professional career in the financial services industry.

After a brief stint in the financial sector he left for a promising opportunity in inventory management at Salem Steel. Philip was brought in to assist in managing Salem's growing inventory, but has developed to oversee the company's purchasing, logistics, inventory programs, supplier relations, and entire ERP computer program.

In recent years, he has furthered his education by completing his Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA) at Rutgers, with a concentration in Supply Chain Management. Philip has the intelligence and skills necessary to have a long and promising career with Salem Steel.


Mark Otis

V.P. Production & Quality

Mark has been employed by Salem Steel since 2002. He began his tubing career in 1967 at Pacific Tube Company, Los Angeles, California, and during his 34 years tenure at Pacific Tube, his responsibilities were numerous, including, Traffic Supervisor, Manufacturing Supervisor, Hazardous Waste/Safety Manager and Plant Superintendent.

Mark is extremely knowledgeable in all seamless and ERW manufacturing procedures, including; pickling and lubrication, heat treating (to achieve required physical properties), cold drawing, round and shaped tubing including, hexagon, rectangles and streamlines. At the mills we represent, Mark has implemented several in process inspection procedures at the drawnbenches and straightening line, 100% final dimensional and visual inspections, to insure the highest levels of quality.

Mark works very closely with both our producing mills and customers, assisting them with technical and quality issues. He is one of the top experts in the field anywhere on the globe.


Mark Jones

Executive Sales

Mark's career in the steel tubular products industry commenced in 1970, while still pursuing his college degree from Geneva College in Beaver Falls, PA.

Mark has spent his entire professional career involved in the steel and aluminum tube industry. Mark has worked for industry leaders on both the production, and the distribution segments of the industry. His background affords him a unique blend of talents and experience to serve customer's needs, from both a commercial and technical standpoint. Mark has performed in a variety of positions, starting in inside sales. advancing to outside sales, then promoted into management positions in the purchasing, product and sales of our business at local, regional and national levels. He has been part of the Salem team since 2003.

His insight, garnered from his varied background, affords him unique perspective of Salem's customer's needs and requirements.

His core values of a strong work ethic, honesty and integrity, in conjunction with his industry experience and product knowledge, allows him an unparalleled perspective in addressing and solving customers requirements from steel service center, to OEM applications in his market.

Mark has been a resident of Valparaiso, IN for the past 12 years, and has spent portions of his life and career in various parts of the United Sates., including New York/New Jersey, Oklahoma, Illinois,Texas and Ohio, which enhances his rich and unique professional experience.


Patrick O'Brien

Executive Sales

Patrick is a 1997 graduate of the University of Kansas and is a resident of Chicago,IL. Patrick has over twelve years experience in the steel tubing industry and began his career in 1998 with Leavitt Tube. He started with Leavitt Tube as an Inside Sales Representative supporting customers throughout the United States. After 3 years Patrick was promoted to Outside Sales Representative. Throughout his Outside Sales tenure Patrick covered the Midwest Territory dealing with both Service Centers and OEMs. His strong work ethic and knowledge of his customers needs have allowed him to gain their trust and respect throughout his career. Patrick joined the Salem Steel team in May, 2010, and is a welcome addition to our staff.


Daniel (Danny) Wolfe

Fluid Power Products Manager

Danny graduated from LeTourneau University in Longview, TX in 1994 with a B.S. in Industrial Management.

After graduation, he spent the next 21 years of his career at Scot Industries. His experience includes: hands-on training and operation of honing equipment and metallurgical laboratory studies, eight years in Sales and Quality Control, eight years in Plant Operation and Management, and most recently in New Business Development with additional focus on working with customers to provide engineered solutions for difficult material applications. This broad spectrum of experience, combined with a commitment to the customer, exemplify his belief that customer service, quality, and competitive prices are the most important aspects of the sales process.

Danny joined Salem Steel in early 2016 to head the Fluid Power Products Division with the goal of creating a high quality, economically priced premium supplier of honed and SRB tubing. Additionally offering chrome plated rod, to Salem’s distributor network and OEM hydraulic cylinder manufacturers.


Matt Lowenthal

Traffic Manager

Matt studied Business Management at Berkeley College with a background in Labor Relations. His career in traffic and logistics started in 2001 when he was hired by Dish Network to manage the routing of all technicians as well as control inventory.

In 2004, Matt was hired by Premier Steel, Inc as their Logistics Manager. At Premier, while managing inventory, he also ran the daily transit operations, moving full truck loads and LTLs (less than truck loads) throughout the United States from their plants in the Midwest.

Matt’s vast network of carriers, and warehouse management experience, make him an integral part of Salem’s daily operations.


Todd Derleth

Warehouse Manager – St. Louis

Todd began his career at Salem’s St. Louis facility in 2007. From day one, he’s handled all the duties of a busy warehouse facility, quickly progressing to warehouse manager. He now manages the warehouse team and ensures that our St. Louis operations run smoothly. Todd oversees all in and out bound freight, product inspection (including dimensional and hardness readings), inventory control, employee safety, cycle counts, and product conformance. He follows a continuous improvement mentality to ensure Salem Steel’s quality standards are consistently met and exceeded. Todd’s knowledge has been pivotal in helping Salem to grow into our 70,000 square foot facility.
